The Duro Flash paid for itself the first time I had to use it – Trucker Steve

Have you ever wondered why some drivers can log millions of accident free miles, without incident? While others seem to be involved in situations far to often? Is it luck, skill, intuition or a combination of those things?

As a driver with nearly 2 million miles without accident or incident I can assure you that proper preparation, forecasting situations and skill, play a huge part in staying safe out here. I can also tell you that not all experience is created equal. “Well how is that?” you ask.

First let me tell you what experience is not. Experience is not time, time only allows for more experiences to occur. That is right,you can spend numerous years on the road and if you learn nothing from your mistakes, or the mistakes of others around you, then what good is your experience? It is worthless right?

I’ll let you in on a little secret,  a secret that has been in my family since my grandfather started trucking , The same secret that has helped my father drive 5 million miles with a perfect record.

Remember that last accident you got stuck behind? what did you think at the time?  “Damn that sucks, I wish they would get this cleared up I’m behind schedule?” does that sound familiar? When your done at the end of the day, what do you do?

What I do is run through my mental notes of the days events (Having a camera rolling, also helps) . At the end of the day I play back the accident to determine what happen and how I can avoid that given situation.

I also re-live my day taking into account the things I have done, as well as others around me, that could have gone bad but didn’t. I refine my skill daily taking into account anything that could one day cause a incident. “Complacency will kill you, pay attention to the details”  my father says .

Years ago stuck battling a Oregon blizzard I came up on a accident. A semi driver  lost control of his vehicle and slid into the ditch.  During the winter time this is a daily occurrence.

When I showed up to the scene I witnessed one of the most horrific accidents I had ever seen. A family of 7 rear ended the back of the trailer stuck in the road, no one but the trucker survived.

The trucker, after sliding into the ditch lit his flares to warn drivers of the accident ahead.  His flares burned out and before he could get back to set a new set and triangles, this horrific accident happened.

What did I learn from this experience?

Road flares burn out and triangles blow over or collapse, they’re not efficient warning devices. I searched all over the internet looking for a setup that actually worked.

I found a device from Roadside safety called the DuroFlash

This thing is one of the most solid built products I have ever owned, weighing in at 7.7 pounds but small enough to fit in a very small space in your side box. I have actually seen people run them over and they have continued to work with no problems.

There are no switches to break off and the led flares are conveniently stored in the charging dock.You unplug them from the cradle and they turn on, plug them in and they turn off.  One of the things I found extremely cool about this product is if someone gets the idea to walk off with your duro flash flare, they can’t turn it off and if they manage to get away once it runs out of battery it is useless to them with out the storage/battery charger! (genius)

The box comes with the six duro flash led flares (you can pick multiple colors), the storage and charging box with plug ins for ac and dc.   They work for about six hours continuously in every kind of weather situation. It takes them about 2 hours to be fully charged,  so if you’re using three of them as warning devices while keeping the others charged you would never have to worry.

The duro flash package cost 200 $ retail. I know what your saying “holy cow, that is a lot of money for something I may not use a whole lot”.  I got them knowing that one day they would make a difference.

Last night they paid for them self. (pictured right)  Delivering a load just out side LA I blew out a tire about 7 miles from my delivery point. As I’m setting out my last Duro Flash I look up and see a vehicle swerve from the shoulder back to the road (asleep or drunk I presume) flying at a high rate of speed, The flares woke him up. I thought OMG that was close, as I put my heart back in my chest.

About 10 minutes later I hear sirens as the ambulance and fire trucks fly past me. I find a shop near by that can replace my tire, as I continue up the road to replace the tire, there on the side of the road is the same vehicle who had nearly hit me earlier, he had ran into the back of a parked car. They all lived, Had they hit me at the rate  of speed he was traveling I’m certain serious injury or death would of been the outcome.

Remember what I said earlier about learning from others experience? Learn from mine because it could happen to you. I called the guy who made this product and said “hey I think the duro flash is awesome” I told him what had happen to me,  I told him “we need to get this into the hands of more truckers.
