Javier Fernandez-Han in the Community Excellence Award

In this video, I share the experience I had in February in India. About four months ago, I visited some friends who we first met in 2009 at the Summit Youth Society in Boston. They are My India Empowered (MIE) team. This team pursues a number of different challenges. One project is the construction and management of national forest school in Mumbai. The school is a “tribal community” who are local people who lived in the same place, even before the Mumbai city was founded. These people work extremely hard, but won only one or two U.S. dollars a day. Their income is unpredictable and usually they are not doing enough to meet basic living needs. In this school, I was very impressed by three volunteers who help teach “Tribal” students aged around 3-12. They were very polite and patient. They also helped with the translation for teachers of the Ministry staff for “Tribal” peasants speak a language other than that spoken by the Ministry staff. I was struck twice, when I realized that these three volunteers, who also lived a few dollars a day. Although they themselves are in need, these three young men spend their free time to help others who were in even greater need. To recognize these three amazing people and others in their footsteps, established Javier Fernandez-Han Excellence in the Community award.
