Truck driver training l Trucking industry commentary | Driver career advice from veteran trucking teacher Trucker Steve

Truckers pay, the real key to safer highways in America!

Not a day goes by that I don’t hear “we need to improve highway safety” and tho trucking is at its safest point in history I would think that the constant pressure to make improvement plays a big part in that success. I personally believe that the current pay system in the trucking industry contributes to not only accidents on the highway but poor health for many drivers. Could changing the way truckers are paid make a difference for the well being of millions?

Every week on the blind spot trucking talk radio show industry experts get together to discuss the future and current state of the trucking industry.  Join in with the 30-50 regular cast members who are live on the call to talk about what matters in trucking, maybe your a little shy? Minnesota Checklist Fatigue

mn fatigue list 787643 Minnesota Checklist Fatigue

A national trucker drivers’ association is suing the Minnesota State Patrol, contending that it is illegally taking rigs out of service based on a secret interrogation checklist that officers use in the hopes of catching operators who are too tired to be on the road.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday (5/13/9)  in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis by the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Inc. on behalf of drivers Stephen K. House of Sprindale, Wash., and Gary B. Page, of Spencer, Wis. Named as defendants, all with the patrol, are Chief Mark Dunaski, Capt. Ken Urquhart and a handful of officers.

“We consider this … an outrageous abuse of police power and an intolerable violation of the civil and constitutional rights of professional truckers,” said Jim Johnston, president of the association, the largest in the nation representing professional truckers. “We see no justification for this conduct either scientifically or in rational, legitimate law enforcement.”

A copy of the suit and the checklist were forwarded to the State Patrol this morning for comment. A spokesman said the patrol was declining to say anything because it involves pending litigation.

The suit says that the checklist was created by Urquhart, and officers were “strongly urged” in an internal memo to use it when stopping truckers, even though it “does not define fatigue, nor does it incorporate any medically or clinically tested and approved methods for measuring fatigue.”

The suit adds that the patrol has failed to make this checklist public and used it to remove House and Page from behind the wheel.

The checklist, the suit says, includes various criteria to evaluate, among them: driver’s mood and cleanliness, odor in the cab, overflowing ashtrays, presence of a urine bottle. Also on the list, the suit says: driver’s neck size, tendency to be overly agreeable, presence of a cell phone, access to the Internet.

In this episode of the blind spot trucker talk show we covered quite a bit of ground, our main focus of the show was to discuss the legality and our personal opinions on this controversial topic.

The recession and future of trucking

One of the reasons people get into trucking is the chance to travel all over America. Maybe you are from a small town or city and have not been many places. Or maybe you have just been stuck in the same city all of your life, working a dead end day to day job. Well, if you get into truck driving, you will have the chance to go in and out many different states. You will get an upfront look at why many people consider America one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Some of the great sites you could see are The Grand Canyon, Rocky Mountains, Oceanfront’s, Great Lakes, and much more.

Another of the great benefits of being a truck driver is the fact that you won’t have a boss breathing down your back or watching over you. Your main job will be to get to your destinations on time and legal. What you do in between the drive is up to you. As a truck driver, you decide when you wake up, when to take a break, and when you want to take off. Just as long as you schedule your time right and deliver your loads legally, you’re pretty much able to work on your own time frame. There is no boss riding along with you.the blind spot trucking talk show

People in other sectors are getting laid off from work due to the recession. Some others are just making a career change. Either way enrollment in trucking schools has increased by thirty percent in part due to the idea that the trucking sector is recession proof, as well as the promise of big money! In this weeks episode of the blind spot trucking talk show we discuss the recession and the future of trucking. This show is a live recorded weekly show from real truckers telling it like it is, not recruiters or some one selling you a product or a dream.
